What makes a good board book?

“Where’s Spot? Is he behind the door? Inside the clock? In the piano?”

Little fingers can’t wait to open the flaps in this inviting board book and find Spot, an adorable, puppy who hides in clever places. Eric Hill published Where’s Spot, his number one best-seller, in 1980. Today, Spot’s continuing adventures remain popular interactive books for babies.

Looking for good board books, such as Eric Hill’s Spot collection, can be overwhelming. There is too much to choose from. Adding to the confusion, many children’s storybooks are now published in board book editions. They were never meant to be board books. The story and pictures were designed for older children in a large, more detailed, storybook format.

When shopping for baby board books, look for these features:

• Simple, one or two images per page

• Bold pictures of baby’s world

• Sturdy lift-the-flaps (1-3 years)

• Simple, short story

Toddlers love board books, too.

Gather a board book collection. Keep one or two in your diaper bag to entertain baby. A good board book is timeless. In my next post, I’ll tell you about some of my favorite board books. Meanwhile, enjoy  this video of author Eric Hill reading Where’s Spot?
